Nothing But The Whole Truth

truthI’m currently hooked on to the reality show ‘Sach Ka Saamna’ (adaptation of the American show ‘Moment of Truth’). The dashing show host Rajeev Khandelwal appears perfectly poised and composed when the contestants blabber the bitter truth and secrets of their lives in front of millions of viewers. Honestly, I believe it takes a lot of nerve to be there and face the brutal questions which often lead to marring the relationship with your loved ones. Whichever way, once said and done they have to live with the truth for the rest part of their lives. Even though it means encroaching one’s privacy, it’s more like – anything for money honey!!

“The truth hurts like a thorn at first; but in the end it blossoms like a rose.” ~ Samuel Ha-Naqid

Our television screens have been transformed into 20-inch confessionals where we get to see common people confess to having extra marital affairs, lecherous and murderous thoughts, and all sort of perfectly natural human traits that, until now, only our A-class celebrities and politicians have been publicly doing.

Secret lives
Watching the show has made me think that our lives are not the only ones going through the tyranny of fate, repercussions of the actions taken or the choices we make. Every single person you meet or the stranger who has just walked passed you has a story to tell about his life’s trials and triumphs or the secrets he has been carrying in his heart all along which may have caused a permanent abrasion on his soul never to be healed. I have a memory of having no holds barred conversation years back with one of my good friend Shashi when he said “There have been moments when at some point we have been embarrassed by certain circumstances in our lives, be it our dysfunctional families, our not so perfect houses or the dark secrets lying deep within us. But eventually we grow out of it.”

True lies
As a teenager I remember thinking about my NRI neighbor being one of the most luckiest and happiest person in the world whose yearly visit consisted only renovating his already plush 2BHK apartment for no apparent reason. The adage: The grass always looks greener on the other side holds so true. The secrets or true lies being camouflaged behind the luxurious exteriors of his classy lifestyle is what one will never know.

Truth……….it either liberates you or pushes you to the dark dungeons of penitence forever. Maybe these shows won’t leave us richer human beings. If anything it’s all about vicarious pleasure. Anyone who watches it, somewhere says to himself or herself that my life is not as bad.

“The truth is cruel, but it can be loved and it makes free those who love it.” ~ George Santayana
